Ajax Pullover
Design
In tellings of the Trojan War, Ajax is a powerful, overwhelming symbol of strength, second only to Achilles. When Achilles eventually falls in battle, Ajax and Odysseus lead the fight against the Trojans to reclaim his body and ensure he is buried with his partner and lover, Patroclus. Here, Ajax’s strength and fortitude are reflected in the pillars of twisted stitches, creating a ribbed herringbone effect.
This piece has great versatility as a three-season look: Wear it as an outer garment in a moderate climate and when the temps drop, layer a winter vest or jacket on top.
Construction
This garment is worked seamlessly from the top down. Knitting starts at the cross back and works to the underarm. Next the front shoulders are picked up and worked down, while the front neckline is shaped to the underarm. The front and back stitches are placed on the same needle and worked to the bottom. Next stitches are picked up around the armhole, and the sleeve cap is shaped using short rows, then the sleeve is worked down to the cuff. Finally, the neckline stitches are picked up and worked in 1x1 rib for a turtleneck.
